Territorial Dynamics and Inequality: the contribution of inter and transdisciplinary approaches
Inaugural Conference of the Doctoral Programme in Development, Societies & Territories
Inaugural Conference of the Doctoral Programme in Development, Societies & Territories
The forthcoming international conference on Development, Societies & Territories, DeST2018, will be held under the aegis of the PhD Programme in Development, Societies and Territories (DeST). It is jointly organized by the Centre for Transdisciplinary Development Studies (CETRAD) and the Department of Economics, Sociology & Management (DESG) of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), with the support of the Iberian R&D unit network which anchor the PhD programme DeST. It will be held on the 11th of May 2018 at the School of Hotel & Tourism Management (EHTL) in the historic city of Lamego, a UNESCO world heritage site close to the Douro Valley in the North of Portugal.
The first international conference on Development, Societies & Territories - DeST2018 - will focus on Territorial Dynamics and Inequality: the contribution of inter and transdisciplinary approaches with the aim of stimulating an interdisciplinary debate, with a transdisciplinary view by putting together the research community and the socio-territorial development practitioners, including the local development actors, policy-makers, NGOs, businesses, communities and the representatives of civil society. Together we can discuss whether the theories, models, heuristics, methodologies and analytical frameworks currently available to us are fit for purpose. In other words, are the tools we have at our disposal capable of delivering the research findings, public policies and organizational strategies most conducive to territorial development? More specifically, we would welcome the opportunity to examine the future implications for socioeconomic and spatial (in)equality of the innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives currently being deployed across the world in various types of territorial strategies. To what extent do we need to rethink and modify the tools we use? Is there a need for new approaches in research, policy and management? You are cordially invited to contribute with your research to the DeST2018 Conference and help to provide new empirical and conceptual insights into future modes of analysing territorial dynamics, to help open up new perspectives and to sketch tomorrow’s research agendas in this field. If we are to stimulate territorial vitality, the capacity to retain value-added and to attract population, territories must become more competitive, intelligent, cohesive and compassionate. A crucial component in this process of adaptation is helping localities gain access to and make use of research findings and, in particular, research that reflects in a holistic, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary way on location-specific problems, and provides solutions that take into account both the socio-economic, cultural, organisational and policy environments and the local, regional, national, EU and global contexts in which any community’s livelihood is embedded. We look forward seeing you in Lamego on the 11th of May! The DeST2018 Conference team |
